Discover wildlife from around the world at the Arcachon Basin Zoo
With more than 1,000 animals living in semi-liberty on a 22-hectare site, the Arcachon Basin Zoo is one of the largest animal parks in the region. A 4 km tree-lined circuit allows visitors to discover fascinating animals from Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Oceania. Adults and children alike will be enchanted by the diversity of animals to be seen at the Bassin d’Arcachon Zoo.
Animals at the Arcachon Basin Zoo
The zoo counts many species of primates among its residents. You can see :
- tamarinds,
- orangutans,
- languages,
- chimpanzees,
- capucins,
- marmosets.
African animals are well represented with :
- elephants,
- giraffes,
- hippos,
- rhinos,
- zebras.
Cat lovers will be delighted to see lions, tigers, cheetahs, jaguars and panthers. As for children, they’ll probably enjoy the cutest animals like guinea pigs, kangaroos and alpacas. The zoo also boasts a wide variety of bird species. From colourful macaws and amazons to ostriches, ducks, cranes and storks, budding ornithologists will have a great time at the Bassin d’Arcachon zoo.
Activities at the Arcachon Basin Zoo
The zoo also offers a variety of educational activities at certain times each day. Simply ask for the program at the entrance. To get a little closer to the animals, half-day sessions give you the chance to find out more about the job of animal caretaker.
Rates and opening hours
The Bassin d’Arcachon Zoo is open from mid-February to early November. Opening times vary according to the season, and the zoo is sometimes only open in the afternoon. From early April to early September, it is open from 10 am to 7 pm. Admission is €26.90 for children aged 12 and over, and €19.90 for children aged 3 to 11. Children under 3 enter free of charge. Discounts are available for disabled visitors and groups. A self-service restaurant, snack bar and picnic area are available for visitors. The Bassin d’Arcachon zoo is located 30 minutes north of the campsite at Lac de Biscarrosse.
