What to do when it rains in the Landes?
Although the summer months tend to be dry, the Landes is one of France’s wettest departments, particularly in autumn and winter. On a camping vacation in the Landes, it’s wise to know what you can do in case of bad weather. Fortunately, here are a few suggestions for family activities when it rains in the Landes.
Visit a museum
The Landes department has a number of museums and places to visit on a rainy day. For example, you can learn about thehistory of seaplanes at the Musée de l’Hydraviation in Biscarrosse. Here you can see seaplanes, souvenirs, reproductions, photos, uniforms and aircraft parts. In Mont-de-Marsan, the Musée Despiau-Wlerick exhibits a formidable collection of over 2,000 sculptures. Other museums in the Landes region include the Borda museum in Dax, the Marquèze eco-museum in Sabres, the prehistory museum in Brassempouy and the Chalosse museum in Monfort.
Taste Landes wines
Landes wines are not yet as well known as their Bordeaux neighbors. But they are not lacking in character and taste. Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne are the Landes’ best-known spirits. The wine-growing area is divided between the hillsides of Chalosse and the Tursan vineyards, with Tursan being the only AOP wine in the Landes. Tursan wines are often very tannic and powerful on the palate. To discover them, you’ll find several wine tourism vineyards in the Landes, notably in Chalosse, between Dax and Mont-de-Marsan.
Relax in a spa
What could be better on a rainy day than to spend a day being pampered in a balneotherapy center or spa? The Landes region boasts waters renowned for their medicinal virtues. Dax is of course the Landes’ flagship destination, with a wide choice of thermal baths, but you can also enjoy massages and other treatments at other thermal baths in Saubusse, Saint-Paul-Lès-Dax, Préchacq-les-Bains and Eugénie-Les-Bains.
