Discover the gastronomy of the Landes!

Visiting the Landes without sampling theregion’s gastronomic delights? Unthinkable! While you’re camping in the Landes, take advantage of the many surprising culinary specialities on offer. Landes products boast numerous quality labels, from Label Rouge to Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) to Indication géographique protégée (IGP).

From duck to salmon, meat and fish from the Landes

Duck is a staple of the South-West, with ancestral know-how and renowned firms such as Delpeyrat and Labeyrie: foie gras, magret… Discover also poultry from the Landes region, including poularde, capon and quail. Landes chicken was first awarded the Label Rouge food label in 1965. If you prefer red meat, try Chalosse beef, raised for over three years on a 100% natural diet, for exceptional meat. As for fish, you can feast onHossegor oysters or shad, a tasty fish from the Adour river. Now extremely rare and protected, you’ll also find Adour salmon (only at Maison Barthouil).

Fruit and vegetables from the Landes

Ideal for bringing a little freshness to the palate, the Adour kiwi, both Label Rouge and IGP, is on sale between mid-December and April, as is theasparagus des sables, best bought directly from producers. You’ll find them on the shelves between March and May.

Some traditional Landes dishes

A number of pastry shops are well worth a visit:

  • pastis landais,
  • a traditional brioche fragrant with orange blossom, rum and vanilla;
  • tourtière, a thin layer of puff pastry with Armagnac and apples,
  • Dax madeleines, a unique recipe.

On the savoury side, don’t miss :

  • garbure Gascogne, a hearty soup with variations that include duck confit,
  • Landaise salad with gizzards, dried duck breast, duck strips, lettuce, tomatoes, bread croutons…

Local spirits not to be missed

For an aperitif or to accompany your meal in the Landes region, why not try a littleArmagnac, France’s oldest brandy. The Fête de l’Armagnac is held in October, and is a great opportunity to taste this spirit! Or try a dash of Floc de Gascogne, which contains one part Armagnac to two parts grape juice. The wines are not to be outdone:

  • Tursan wine,
  • IGP wines from the ocean sands,
  • of the Chalosse hillsides.

If you prefer beer, enjoy craft beers like Kanaha Beer in Biscarrosse. Finally, round off your aperitif with Soustons peanuts, produced exclusively at the Darrigade farm.
